Motorcycle MOT Checklist: What You Need to Know Before Your Test

Motorcycle MOT Checklist

Ensuring your motorcycle is roadworthy and safe to ride is essential. The MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a mandatory requirement for all motorcycles in the UK.

To help you prepare for your bike MOT, we’ve compiled a comprehensive checklist of key areas that will be inspected.

By familiarising yourself with these points, you can increase your chances of passing the test and ensuring your bike is in optimal condition.

MOT Checklist For Your Motorcycle

1. Lights and Reflectors: Ensure all lights (headlights, taillights, indicators, brake lights) and reflectors function correctly.

2. Brakes: Check the effectiveness of both front and rear brakes. The brake pads should be sufficiently thick.

3. Tyres: Inspect the tyres for tread depth, cuts, or bulges. The tread depth should be a minimum of 1.6mm.

4. Exhaust System: Verify that the exhaust system is not leaking, damaged, or excessively noisy.

5. Steering and Suspension: Ensure the steering is responsive and accessible from excessive play. Check the suspension components for any damage or wear.

6. Engine and Gearbox: Confirm that the engine starts and runs smoothly and that the gearbox shifts gears quickly.

7. Horn and Mirrors: Test the horn to ensure it functions properly. Verify that both mirrors are securely attached and provide a clear view.

8. Chassis and Bodywork: Inspect the chassis and bodywork for structural damage or excessive corrosion.

9. Registration and Insurance: Ensure your motorcycle’s registration and documents are valid.

Ensuring your motorcycle meets these criteria increases your chances of passing the MOT test and enjoying your two-wheeled adventure safely on the road.
